Digital Natives and the Technological divide

Microsoft Word is software I have used for around 10 years.  I began using it in 5th grade to complete school projects and papers.  I prefer Microsoft Word when it comes to individual papers and projects due to the easy accessibility and save options.  However, when it comes to group projects Google Docs is the best option because multiple people can be on the document simultaneously.

All of the standards of the ISTE for Educators are crucial in being a successful teacher and producing students who will become successful members of our growing society.  The most meaningful standard to me is 2.3.  This standard deals with inspiring your students to become successful citizens in their own communities as they develop.  I feel like this is the most important thing a teacher can do for their students because much of what they learn will be forgotten but being inspired to be great citizens wherever they end up will stay with them.

I do agree with the statement that most people under the age of 30 are considered digital natives.  Being a digital native means technology and media are something you grew up in and learned from a young age.  Most people over this age had to learn to use technology in their jobs and social life while they were already there which makes them digital immigrants.  For those that use technology as digital immigrants I feel as though it is more difficult for them to be as productive as those that are more accustomed like digital natives.  Future students will not be forced to learn about ways to use technology on their own like our generation has had too   I feel like future digital natives will have teachers that were also digital natives making the learning experience easier and more enjoyable.

Badges are cool ways that certain programs or digital platforms like video games allow users or participators to gain skills.  I have earned badges in high school for getting good grades on certain exams and have also earned them on video games after completing a task or becoming proficient in a skill.  In NBA 2k, an xbox and playstation game, you earn badges for your character based on what skills you are really good at like shooting or defending.  I think sharing badges with friends no matter how you get them is a cool way to get people into new things as it is interesting.
